There is no shortage of exciting things to do in Berlin since it’s such a dynamic and interesting city! Unlike any other place we’ve visited, Berlin is perfect for everyone—from hippies and backpackers to families and retirees. Here are our top 10 “cool” things to do in this unique capital city.
One interesting spot is what used to be one of Berlin’s major airports until 2008. Now, it’s a vast open field where both locals and tourists can enjoy running, cycling, skating, yoga, reading, listening to music, and just chilling out. While we were there, a petition was circulating to keep this park accessible to the public rather than letting developers take over. Let’s hope this beautiful area remains free for all to enjoy.
Cycling through Berlin is another must-do activity. The city is very bike-friendly with designated lanes and flat terrain, making it easy to explore by bicycle. You can rent a bike on your own or join a guided tour like those offered by Berlin On Bike. Their Bike ‘n’ Bite tour takes you to four different restaurants, a local market, parks, and covers about 12 kilometers. It’s a fun and laid-back experience.
Checking out vintage items at a flea market and relaxing in a park are also great ways to spend your time in Berlin. Mauer Park in Prenzlauer Berg is bustling with a massive flea market and various performances, especially on Sundays. If you’re looking for something even less touristy, head to the RAW flea market. Both spots offer free admission and are great for finding unique items and enjoying live music.
Another cool experience in Berlin is having a beer at a beer garden. For an even more local vibe, you can buy beer from a shop and drink it on the sidewalk outside. Beer gardens have a lively atmosphere and provide chilled glasses for your drink, while sitting outside a shop is a cheaper but equally enjoyable option.
Exploring Berlin’s 12 distinct boroughs on foot is a fantastic way to get to know the city. Each area has its own unique feel—from the artsy Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg to the gentrified Mitte and upscale Prenzlauer Berg. Walking around lets you discover the hidden gems in each neighborhood, and when you’re tired, Berlin’s efficient metro and bus system can get you back to your accommodation.
Berlin is a hub for creative souls, with vibrant street art and murals all over the city. Look out for works by popular artists like Alice Pasquini, Herakut, El Bocho, XOOOOX, and Banksy. Urban Nation is a great place to get more information, but you’ll see plenty of stunning art as you move around Berlin, especially near Urban Spree, The East Side Gallery, and various U-Bahn stops.
Street food is another big part of Berlin’s charm, offering a variety of affordable eats from different cuisines. Whether you’re craving shawarma, Indian food, burritos, or the famous currywurst, Berlin has you covered. For something special, check out the Thai food on offer in Preußenpark on Sundays.
The Club der Visionäre near Treptower Park is perfect for chilling by the canal with a cold beer, especially on weekends. In the evenings, DJs play music that keeps the atmosphere vibrant well into the night.
Finally, taking a free walking tour is an excellent way to see Berlin’s important sites and learn about its history. Tours typically cover places like Checkpoint Charlie, Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island, and Reichstag. For a different perspective, try an alternative walking tour that focuses on street art, multicultural neighborhoods, and urban projects.
