There are numerous fantastic day trips from Tirana, making it an excellent base for exploring Albania. You’ll not only immerse yourself in the rich Albanian culture, food, and history of the city, but you’ll also have access to the beautiful coastline and charming historical towns nearby.
During my two-month stay in Albania, with one month spent in Tirana, I experienced the city’s attractions and ventured out on several day trips to the coast and surrounding scenery. Here are my top recommendations for day trips from Tirana.
1. Berat: Known as the city of 1,000 windows, Berat is one of my favorite day trips. Its stone houses stacked on a hillside give it a unique charm, and it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with historical buildings. Key highlights include the Berat Castle, the Red Mosque, and St. Trinity Church. Regular buses run from Tirana to Berat every 30 minutes, making it easily accessible.
2. Mount Gamti and Lake Bovilla: Just 20 kilometers north of Tirana, Lake Bovilla’s stunning blue and turquoise waters, surrounded by mountains, make it a perfect spot for nature enthusiasts. Hiking trails offer breathtaking views over the lake. You can join a hiking tour that includes private transport and a guided hike to make the most of your visit.
3. Durrës: Albania’s second city, Durrës, is over 3,000 years old and blends ancient history with coastal vibes. Its major attraction is the Roman Amphitheater. Buses run from Tirana to Durrës regularly, with the journey taking about 45 minutes.
4. Kruja: Famous for its rich history and resistance against the Ottoman Empire, Kruja is home to a popular bazaar and historical sites. The bus ride from Tirana takes about 55 minutes.
5. Blue Eye and Ksamil: In southern Albania, the Blue Eye is a spectacular natural spring, while Ksamil beaches epitomize the beauty of the Albanian Riviera. There are no direct buses, so a guided tour is highly recommended.
6. Gjirokastër: Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, this stone city offers cobbled streets, a beautiful castle, and panoramic views. The bus from Tirana to Gjirokastër takes around four hours, or you can opt for a guided day tour.
7. Montenegro: Tirana’s proximity to Montenegro makes day trips to Budva or Kotor feasible. Both cities boast rich history, stunning scenery, and cultural charm. Guided tours are the best way to explore these areas efficiently.
8. Shkoder: This city is considered the cultural capital of Albania and an access point to the Albanian Alps. A visit to Shkoder usually includes bike rides around the lake and explorations of scenic spots.
9. Komani Lake: Accessible only by boat, this is an ideal trip for outdoor lovers. The boat ride through the Shala River offers stunning views. Joining a tour is essential to navigate this remote area.
10. Ohrid in North Macedonia: This charming town is known for its 365 churches and crystal-clear lake. Buses from Tirana to Ohrid are available, but a guided tour ensures you get the most out of your visit.
