Weekend in Philadelphia: A Fun and Easy Guide

Planning a quick trip to Philadelphia? Here’s a rundown of how to make the most of a weekend in the City of Brotherly Love.

If you’re into American history, Philly is a top destination. This is where the founding fathers penned the Declaration of Independence in 1776, establishing a new nation.

Having lived in Philly as a kid, I have fond memories of the city. I’ve returned many times and always find something new. Now, I’m excited to share tips for exploring one of my favorite American cities.

With 2 days in Philadelphia, you can visit historical sights, watch a sports game, explore public markets, check out museums, bar-hop, or dive into some delicious cheesesteaks!

For outdoor lovers, Penn’s Landing and Fairmont Park offer plenty of activities like hiking, kayaking, cycling, and ice-skating, depending on the season.

Day 1: Dive Into History

Kick off your first day with breakfast at FRIEDA, a European-style café with a great weekend brunch menu. Alternatively, grab coffee at La Colombe Coffee Roasters or Old City Coffee Inc. for a lighter start.

First stop: Independence Hall, also known as “America’s birthplace.” This is where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were signed. You’ll need a guided tour to visit, which you can book for free at the visitor’s center or online for a $1 fee.

Nearby, you’ll find the Liberty Bell with its famous crack and the inspiring inscription: “Proclaim Liberty throughout the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.”

For lunch, try City Tavern for a historical dining experience. Afterward, head to Penn’s Landing on the Delaware River for a walk along the promenade, some kayaking, or even a ferry ride to New Jersey for skyline views.

In the afternoon, consider a 2-hour Segway tour that covers the riverfront, historic districts, and Chinatown. These tours run at 12:30 and 3 PM and cost $55.

As the day winds down, celebrate with a beer. Philadelphia has many unique beer gardens and breweries. Join a Beer, Band, Brewery & Beer Garden Tour for a fun evening or explore the Independence Beer Garden or the Stratus Rooftop Lounge for a swankier vibe.

If you love sports, check the schedule to see if the Eagles, 76ers, Flyers, or Phillies have a game. Watching a live game in this sports-crazy city is a memorable experience.

Day 2: Eat and Explore Art

Start the day at Reading Terminal Market, one of the oldest public markets in the U.S. Grab breakfast from one of the merchants or head to Beiler’s Bakery for donuts. Alternatively, check out Federal Donuts.

Next, channel your inner Rocky by running up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Afterward, explore the museum’s extensive collection.

For lunch, indulge in a Philly cheesesteak from Pat’s King of Steaks or Geno’s—try both to see which you prefer!

After lunch, visit the Magic Gardens, a stunning mosaic art environment created by Isaiah Zagar. Tickets are $10 and should be booked online.

Wrap up the weekend with a stroll along South Street for some shopping and street art. There are plenty of dining options from Thai to Moroccan, and a variety of bars for a final night out.

Tips for Your Philly Weekend

Most travelers arrive at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). SEPTA’s regional rail offers an efficient and affordable route to downtown, taking 25 minutes. Taxis and ride-shares like Uber and Lyft are also available.
