It’s easy to understand why travelers and creative souls from around the globe often consider San Cristobal de las Casas (San Cristobal) one of their favorite spots in Mexico. If you’re seeking a cultural experience brimming with art, tradition, and color, you’ll find it hard to leave this vibrant town.
The first thing you’ll notice in San Cristobal is its European vibe, with cobblestone streets, wrought-iron balconies, and plant-filled spaces. Yet, it retains that Mexican charm with houses painted in bright, cheerful colors. Nestled in a valley at 2200 meters above sea level, San Cristobal enjoys cool days and genuinely cold winters. Even in summer, the nights can get quite chilly, so pack both warm and cool climate clothing.
Here are some top recommendations for things to do in San Cristobal de las Casas, based on my visits over the past three years:
1. Free Walking Tour: This is my favorite activity. The tour offers fascinating insights, hidden gems to explore, and friendly locals to meet. It takes about 3 hours and includes stops at the Artisan and Municipal Markets, a bakery with complimentary juices and organic coffee, and some of the best artisan shops. You’ll also visit two beautifully decorated churches and finish in a pox bar, where you can sample this local moonshine. Walking tours, funded by donations, offer great value and are a must-do in any Mexican city.
2. Indigenous Villages Tour: A visit to these villages is eye-opening and impactful. You’ll pass flower farms and stop in Zinacantan to see indigenous textile-making. In San Juan Chamula, the cultural experience inside the church is unlike any other, with unique rituals and decor. Tours cost around $300 pesos and are easily bookable in town. Horse rides to San Juan Chamula are also an option.
3. Iglesia de Guadalupe: Perched atop a hill with a fantastic view, this church features a giant Virgin Mary statue framed in neon lights and eccentric decorations. Entry is free, with an option to climb to the roof for amazing city views at a cost of just 5 pesos.
4. Cascadas El Chiflon: Although these waterfalls weren’t initially on my list, they turned out to be one of the most beautiful places to visit in Mexico. The park has several viewpoints, with the main attraction being the “Velo de Novia” (Bridal Veil) waterfall. Tours are around $35, and it’s a great day trip from San Cristobal.
5. Casa Na Bolom: This museum tells the story of Frans and Trudy Blom, explorers who dedicated their lives to preserving Mayan culture. Entry is 40 pesos, and it’s a short walk from the historical center.
6. Canyon de Sumidero: Known for its wildlife like crocodiles, monkeys, and birds, this canyon offers breathtaking views. Tours are available or you can visit viewpoints if you have a car. It’s one of the best nature experiences in the area.
7. Artisan and Municipal Markets: These bustling markets are the heart of San Cristobal, filled with vibrant handicrafts, clothes, and more. The Municipal Market is hectic but well-organized, offering a real taste of local life.
8. Jade Museum: This small museum near the central Zocalo showcases jade masks and artifacts, offering a quick but fascinating visit.
9. El Arcotete Park: A short walk from Iglesia de Guadalupe, this park features a natural limestone arch and caves. It’s a popular spot for Mexican travelers, especially on weekends, so visit during the week to avoid crowds.
10. Kakaw Museum: This quaint museum explores the importance of cocoa in Mayan culture, with a charming café downstairs. Entry is just 30 pesos, making it a great stop if you’re near the Zocalo.
San Cristobal de las Casas is a fantastic destination in Chiapas, with a unique blend of art and culture. It’s a side of Mexico that beach-goers often miss. Take time to immerse yourself in the local Tzotzil and Tzeltal cultures, and consider buying some handmade art or amber jewelry as a memento of your visit.
