Having lived near London for most of my life, I can share some wonderful spots that are just a short train ride or drive away. From historic castles to quaint villages and stunning beaches, these day trips offer a perfect escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.

Brighton: A seaside favorite, Brighton offers beautiful beaches, boutique shops, and a vibrant pier filled with amusements and rides. Don’t miss eating fish and chips on the seafront (watch out for seagulls!), exploring “The Lanes” for quirky cafes and shops, or taking a walking tour to learn about the city’s history. Trains from London Victoria station take about 58 minutes, with return tickets costing £13.70.

Stonehenge: This mysterious ancient stone circle is a must-see. Dating back around 5,000 years, it’s a sight to behold on the Salisbury Plains. A half-day tour from London is a convenient way to visit Stonehenge. If driving, it’s en route to Devon or Cornwall on the A303.

Canterbury: Known for its stunning cathedral, Canterbury is steeped in history and boasts three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Enjoy walking through its cobbled streets, discovering medieval buildings, and visiting local shops and cafes. A walking tour can provide insights into the city’s history. Trains from Victoria, St. Pancras, and Paddington Stations take about 54 minutes, with return tickets costing £30.60.

Windsor Castle: The oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world and a residence of Queen Elizabeth, is a fantastic day trip. Tour the state rooms and see incredible artworks. Cotswolds: For picturesque English villages, the Cotswolds offers charming market towns and rustic village pubs. The area is best explored by car or through a tour from London.

Southwold: A charming seaside town on the Suffolk coast, well-known for Adnams Brewery. Enjoy the sandy beaches, Victorian pier, and local pubs. Travel involves a train to Ipswich and a bus from Halesworth, taking about two to three hours.
