Our first few days in Valladolid were packed with activities. We visited art galleries, churches, and watched an outdoor theatre performance called Momentos Sagrados Mayas, but we still hadn’t explored any cenotes! So, we dropped by MexiGo Tours to see what they offered. The owner, Toon, was incredibly friendly and showed us a variety of day trips. We chose the cycle tour around the city and signed up for it the next day.
I know, we’re not usually into tours, but this one was different. There were only four other people with us and a very friendly, knowledgeable guide. Initially, we thought about renting bikes and exploring the cenotes on our own, but after meeting our guide, Juan Carlos, and learning about Maya culture, we were glad we opted for the tour.
The cycle trip cost just over $30 and included the guide, bike rental, lunch, and a light breakfast. Not a bad deal! We rode a total of 15 kilometers and got to see a lot of Valladolid and the surrounding countryside. We started our day at the market, which we’d already visited when we cooked tamales, then headed to the San Bernardino Convent, Oxman Cenote, the Maya village of Dzitnup, and then back to Valladolid.
The day lasted from 9 am to about 2:30 pm, and we were pretty tired by the end. A bit out of shape, I guess! When we got back to the office, Toon treated us to a delicious shot of Xtabentun, a local Maya liquor made from honey and anise. It was a perfect end to a wonderful day cycling around Valladolid.
