A Weekend Adventure in Cambridge: An Ideal 2-Day Escape

If you’re planning a city break in England soon, you’re in luck! I’ve put together a great weekend itinerary for Cambridge. Having grown up near this beautiful university city, I’ve spent many weekends exploring all the fun and interesting things to do in Cambridge.

Located in East Anglia, Cambridgeshire, Cambridge is best known for its prestigious university, founded in 1209. The grand university buildings dominate the skyline, adding a sense of grandeur to the city. It’s the perfect setting for a romantic weekend and a hit among international tourists. The city boasts excellent pubs, bars, restaurants, and cafes, making it ideal for a night out or a weekend with friends.

After visiting many times over the years, I’ve compiled my favorite parts of the city to help you enjoy the best of Cambridge in just two days. So, let’s jump right in and make the most of your weekend!

Make sure you’re wearing comfortable walking shoes, as Cambridge is perfect for exploring on foot. Your phone should be fully charged to capture all the photo-worthy spots.

Start your weekend with a hearty breakfast and some caffeine at Benets Cafe, where you can enjoy delicious crepes and pancakes while taking in views of Kings College Chapel and Great St Mary’s Church. Then, take a guided walking tour to get familiar with the city and see the main sights. Some tours even include entry to three colleges, including the famous Kings College.

Wrap up your morning with a visit to the spot where Sir Isaac Newton discovered gravity. Although the story of the apple falling on his head is a myth, the area celebrates his groundbreaking work during his years at Cambridge.

For lunch, head to Market House, one of my favorite restaurants, known for its stylish decor, outstanding menu, and excellent wine and cocktail list. In the afternoon, experience punting on the River Cam—it’s a quintessential Cambridge activity. You might even come across a floating river bar for a cocktail as you enjoy the scenic river views. Book your punting tour in advance.

Relax with a pint at The Anchor, a cozy pub by the water, perfect for unwinding after your punting adventure. As evening falls, stroll around the beautifully lit city and soak in the atmosphere. Head to Butch Annie’s for dinner, a casual spot that serves delicious burgers and pizzas with a great bar selection.

End your night at 2648, an underground bar with a speakeasy vibe. Try their Salted Caramel White Russian and explore the secret library if you can find it!

After a good night’s sleep, kickstart day two with breakfast at the Copper Kettle, a Cambridge institution since the early 1900s. Overlooking Kings College Chapel, it’s a lovely place to start your day.

Discover more of Cambridge’s history with a self-guided audio tour. Learn about scientific breakthroughs, university traditions, and the iconic University Boat Race. Then, visit the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences, where you can explore fascinating fossils, rocks, and historical artifacts.

For lunch, grab a roast-meat sandwich at Bread & Meat. Their beef sandwich is highly recommended, and they have a tasty veggie option too. In the afternoon, join a heritage pub tour to experience Cambridge’s pub culture while learning about local history.

Take a leisurely walk along The Backs, a picturesque green space behind several colleges, offering some of the best views in England. As night falls, consider a ghost tour led by University alumni for some eerie stories about Cambridge’s past.

For dinner, dine at The Cambridge Chop House, known for its traditional British dishes and stunning views of Kings College Chapel. Reserve a table in advance, as it’s quite popular.

End your weekend with a show at the Cambridge Arts Theatre, a historic venue that hosts top performances and productions from London’s West End. Check the events calendar for the latest shows.

Cambridge is well-connected by train, with regular services running to and from London and other cities. Book your tickets in advance for the best prices. If you’re driving, take advantage of the park-and-ride scheme to avoid city traffic. Fly into London Stansted and either hire a car or take a train to Cambridge.

Cambridge is a highly walkable city, but buses, taxis, and ride-sharing options like Uber are available. The City Center is the main attraction, but other areas like Mill Road and Trumpington offer great amenities and accommodations.

To make the most of your trip, plan ahead. Book tours, hotels, and restaurant reservations in advance. Use the park-and-ride system to navigate the city easily. Consider staying a bit outside the city center to save money, and enjoy the many free attractions Cambridge has to offer.

Remember to pack comfortable shoes for walking and be prepared for unpredictable weather. UK train fares can be high, so plan and book your tickets early, preferably through sites like trainline.com.

Cambridge can be explored comfortably in a weekend, thanks to its walkable layout and abundance of things to see and do. Choose a suitable itinerary and ensure you book popular attractions ahead of time. A rough budget of $250 per person should cover accommodation, dining, drinks, and a couple of tours. Spring and early autumn are ideal times to visit, with pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

So, whether you’re into history, culture, or great food and drinks, Cambridge has everything you need for a fantastic weekend getaway. Enjoy your trip!
