Cornwall, located on the north Atlantic coast, offers some of the best surfing experiences in the UK. Known for its large swells and numerous beaches, it’s my favorite vacation spot for surfing in the UK.
Newquay is considered the surf capital of Great Britain, boasting top beaches like Fistral and Towan, which are perfect for both experienced surfers and beginners looking for lessons. Polzeath is another excellent surf spot, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and a coastal path near Padstow. It’s where I first learned to surf, and although the waves aren’t as big as other beaches in Cornwall, it’s still a fantastic location.
Cornwall, situated in the far southwest of the UK, juts out into the north Atlantic. The wild north coastline is ideal for catching big waves, while the calmer south coast is perfect for beginners. Renowned worldwide for its great surfing beaches, Cornwall is one of Europe’s top destinations for this sport. It caters to all skill levels with a variety of surf spots from north to south. Some of the best-known beaches include Fistral, Perranporth, and lesser-known gems like Sennan Cove and Porthmeor.
Fistral Beach in Newquay is famous for being a great surfing spot for all levels, with numerous surf schools available. Polzeath, my favorite, has gentle waves suitable for beginners and intermediates, along with several surf schools. Perranporth offers a huge beach with excellent waves and plenty of equipment rental options. Porthmeor, recognized with a Blue Flag Award, is a great spot next to St Ives, where you can also hire surf equipment.
Praa Sands, popular among families, is known for its larger waves further out to sea, making it suitable for advanced surfers. Porthtowan and Widemouth Bay are other top spots, each offering excellent conditions for both beginners and more experienced surfers. Constantine Bay and Penhale also provide serious swells and are fantastic places for surfing enthusiasts.
Surfing in Cornwall doesn’t have to be expensive, with board rentals starting at just £15.00 per day. Beginners can enjoy easier waves at places like Fistral and Polzeath, while pros can seek out the challenging breaks at Sennan Cove and Porthleven. Make sure to have a wetsuit, sunblock, and other essentials like wax for grip.
The summer months from June to September are great for surfing in Cornwall due to the warm weather. However, the waves are consistent year-round, though a wetsuit is necessary during the colder months.
In addition to surfing, browsing surf shops in Newquay, Bude, and Polzeath can be enjoyable, offering gear and apparel from top brands. For expert advice and rentals, places like Slide+Guide in Newquay and Ann’s Cottage in Polzeath are highly recommended.
Several surf lessons and courses are available in Cornwall, especially around the Newquay area. These courses provide essential training and equipment, making them perfect for beginners.
Cornwall is accessible by road, bus, and train, and the Newquay International Airport offers connections to major UK cities and Europe. For accommodation, options range from luxury apartments in Newquay to stylish hotels near Polzeath, offering amenities perfectly suited for surfers.
