Journeying Through Germany: Experiencing Berlin and Reconnecting With Friends

Jarryd announced, “I think we’re going to fly to Germany from Thailand.”

Our response? “We’ll book our flight and meet you there!”

After much deliberation about where to spend the 13 days between Malta and the Caribbean, we finally have a plan. We’re heading to Berlin!

We’ve wanted to visit Berlin for many years. It’s a city that we always thought we might end up living in as digital nomads. Berlin has it all: an underground music and club scene, an artsy and hipster vibe, a haven for foodies, and a rich history and culture.

From underground nightclubs and the graffiti-covered Berlin Wall to an island of museums, abandoned buildings, and quirky neighborhoods, Berlin promises to be an excellent choice.

Although Berlin itself has plenty to keep us busy, we’re also considering various day trips. Even with just one week in the city, we hope to explore the surrounding areas.

One of our planned trips is to Leipzig, about two hours away. Known for its culture, arts, music, and the second oldest coffee shop in Europe, it’s a must-visit spot for coffee lovers like us.

We’re also thinking about visiting Dresden, approximately 2.5 hours away. Known as the Florence of the Elbe, Dresden boasts a beautiful collection of art and architecture. Although much of it was destroyed in WWII, the city has been largely restored to its former glory.

We adore Florence, so we’re sure Dresden will captivate us as well.

Another potential day trip is to Potsdam, just a 45-minute drive from Berlin. Once home to the Kaiser and Prussian Kings until 1918, Potsdam features stunning palaces and formal gardens. We’re particularly excited to check out Sanssouci Castle.

We love the flexibility that renting a car offers. Our recent road trips in Macedonia, Croatia, and Albania allowed us to explore off the beaten path and travel at our own pace. Driving in Germany should be a breeze compared to some of the road conditions we’ve encountered, although we’ll probably still manage to get lost!

Apart from exploring Berlin and its surroundings, we’re thrilled to reunite with our friends. As full-time travelers, our friendships often feel fleeting. We meet people, enjoy their company for a while, and then move on. While parting ways can be tough, it’s always exciting when we can reconnect.

In Berlin, we’ll be meeting up with Henrik. If you’ve followed our journey since 2012, you might remember him. We met Henrik while backpacking in Mozambique, and he became a memorable part of our travels. We’ve kept in touch, and now that he’s moved to Berlin, it’s the perfect opportunity to catch up.

The people we meet on our travels, both locals and fellow travelers, shape our experiences. They contribute to our journey through shared laughter, tears, explorations, and adventures.

We’re looking forward to reminiscing with Henrik about our time in Mozambique. We had some incredible adventures there, like snorkeling with whale sharks, scuba diving with humpback whales, hitchhiking, and sailing around deserted islands.

We’re also excited to meet up with Jarryd and Alesha. It’ll be great to reconnect and chat about our travels in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, the World Tourism Forum in Istanbul, and our shared profession—travel blogging!

We’re renting an apartment with Jarryd and Alesha in Berlin, which promises to be a lot of fun.

On May 27th, we’ll bid farewell to the beautiful island of Malta, our apartment, and the friends we’ve made here. It’s been an amazing two months, and we hope to reconnect with our Maltese friends someday and reminisce about our time together.

Though we haven’t published much about Malta on our blog yet, it’s coming soon. We’re working on in-depth guides, travel tips, photo essays, and more, so stay tuned for plenty of information about this unique European destination.

If you have any tips or advice for Berlin, please share them with us! We’d love to hear your recommendations for day trips, restaurants, must-sees, and must-dos!
