Renting a Boat in Zakynthos: Top Companies and Rates for 2023

One of the best things we did in Greece was renting a boat, and Zakynthos is an excellent island for this adventure. It’s easy to rent a boat here—no license required, it’s fairly affordable, and there are many places offering rentals.

However, be cautious. You might end up with a shady company that overcharges you or provides an unreliable boat missing vital safety equipment. Renting a boat and exploring Zakynthos’ hidden coves was one of our favorite travel experiences. It’s a top activity not just for Zakynthos but for Greece overall.

In this guide, I’ll share everything you need to know about renting a boat in Zakynthos, from costs to the best rental companies, based on my 10-day experience on the island.

We first tried renting a boat in Corfu and later hired a boat with a private driver in Zakynthos. I gathered a lot of useful information about the process that I’ll share with you now.

Whether you prefer to drive your own boat or hire a company, you’ll find everything you need to know here.

The best times to rent a boat in Zakynthos align with the best times to visit Greece, primarily during the shoulder seasons (March-May or September-November). The weather is warm and there are fewer crowds. Summer is another great time, but it’s also more crowded. Most companies are closed in winter due to cold sea conditions and rough weather.

In summer, it’s wise to call ahead and book your boat in advance. If booking over the phone isn’t possible, visit the rental office and place a small deposit. In July and August, you might need to pay a €20 deposit a few days prior. During the shoulder seasons, you can usually call on the same day to rent.

Zakynthos offers numerous boat rental options, especially in the south near Keri Beach. Popular companies like Fun and Sea Boat Rentals and Big Blue have positive reviews and clear pricing. Laganas Boat Rentals also offers a good selection with transparent fees.

For those in the north, options like Koroni Boat Rentals might be a bit pricier but come highly recommended with detailed safety briefings.

On average, renting a boat costs between €100 and €140 per day. During off-peak times, you might be able to negotiate a better deal. In high season, prices are higher, and bargaining is less likely.

Always check how much gas will cost before agreeing to rent. The best companies will clearly explain gas costs upfront. Unfortunately, some lack transparency, leading to unexpected charges.

You don’t need a boat license to rent a boat on Zakynthos. These boats are easy to drive and the rental company should give you a thorough safety briefing. Pay attention to the rules and stay within designated areas to avoid dangerous situations.

If you’re going to more challenging areas or if you lack experience, consider hiring a skipper for about €30 a day. Some parts of Zakynthos, like Navagio Beach, require an experienced skipper because of their difficulty to reach safely.

Private boat tours are also available, offering a luxurious and hassle-free experience. These tours often include stops at popular sights like Turtle Island and the Keri Caves, with amenities like snacks and drinks.

You typically can take your boat within a 10-20 kilometer radius from the rental point. Companies set these limits to ensure your safety, as sudden storms can pose significant risks.

Renting a boat in Zakynthos is generally safe. Follow these tips to ensure a smooth experience:

– Stay within the specified boundaries.
– Head back before sunset as many boats aren’t equipped for night navigation.
– Keep a phone with active service to call for help if needed.
– Check for safety gear like fire extinguishers, oars, radios, and life jackets.
– Hire a skipper if you lack experience or plan to visit challenging areas.

Boat rentals typically don’t allow travel between islands unless you’re renting something larger like a yacht. Stick to exploring Zakynthos’ coastline and its secluded spots.

If you’re not comfortable renting a boat yourself, hiring one with a driver offers a more relaxed experience. We used Luxury Island Cruises and had a fantastic time. They can take you to top sights depending on the weather.
