There are plenty of amazing things to do in Protaras besides enjoying the stunning beaches and resorts. Whether it’s exploring the ocean, splashing around in the water park, or enjoying the nightlife of nearby Ayia Napa, Protaras offers endless possibilities for a fun-filled visit.
I spent about four months in Cyprus as a digital nomad, and Protaras was my go-to spot for relaxation, beach time, and cocktails. If you’re heading to Cyprus and wondering what to do in Protaras, here are some of my favorite activities in this beautiful area.
Protaras is not only known for its gorgeous beaches but also serves as a great base for exploring popular spots around the island. For food lovers, a one-day village food and winery tour to the Troodos Mountains is a must. You’ll get picked up in the morning and taken to the mountains, where you can experience traditional Cypriot life. The tour includes stops in the village of Lefkara, famous for its lace-making, and visits to five different workshops and restaurants to try homemade halloumi, village bread, honey, wine, and more. The day ends with a full meze lunch.
Fig Tree Bay is one of Protaras’ top attractions. This popular beach has golden sand and clear blue waters, making it a great choice for families with kids. There are plenty of loungers, bars, and restaurants, and you can even try some water sports. Arrive early during peak months like July and August to secure a spot.
For a unique adventure, take a full-day guided snorkeling tour to explore the caves along the Cyprus coastline between Protaras and Ayia Napa. You’ll discover Lovers’ Arch and Konnos Beach, where you can see green sea turtles. The tour offers all the equipment you need and provides an excellent opportunity to admire the natural beauty of the area. Boat trips from Protaras Pier to Cape Greco are also fantastic, with options for swimming and cooling off in the crystal-clear waters.
If learning about Cyprus’ history interests you, a trip to Nicosia and a walking tour of the Buffer Zone is a fascinating experience. You’ll get an insight into the island’s division and what life is like on both sides of the Green Line.
For families, Waterworld Ayia Napa, an ancient Greece-themed water park, offers a fun day out with rides for all ages. Another favorite activity of mine is a wine tour in the Troodos Mountains, where you can visit family-run wineries and explore traditional villages.
Kayaking along the coast provides a different way to see Protaras, away from the crowds. You’ll get to explore famous sights like Lovers’ Arch and Cape Greco from the water. There are also excellent hiking trails, such as the Agioi Saranta loop, which takes you to a unique cave-church with stunning sunset views.
If you’ve ever wanted to try scuba diving, Protaras is a great place to start. A half-day introductory course will teach you the basics before you dive into Blue Bay to see the local sea life. For more advanced divers, a 3-4 day PADI open-water course is available.
A visit to the ghost town of Varosha in Famagusta offers a glimpse into the past, with abandoned buildings left untouched since the Turkish invasion of 1974. The half-day tour also includes a visit to a gothic city nearby.
For a thrilling adventure, take an 11-hour 4×4 safari through the Troodos Mountains, visiting hidden waterfalls and traditional villages like Omodos, Lefkara, and Platres. A luxury, adults-only catamaran cruise is perfect for couples or groups of friends looking to relax while enjoying the beautiful Cypriot coast.
The church of Profitis Elias offers a lovely early evening walk with breathtaking views over Protaras. The climb up 150 steps is worth it for the stunning scenery and peaceful park at the top.
If you’re a food enthusiast, a traditional food tour of Cyprus is a must. You’ll learn about cheese-making, sample local products like olive oil and honey, and visit the village of Lefkara.
For itineraries, if you’re in Protaras for a day, take a boat or kayaking tour in the morning and spend the afternoon at Fig Tree Bay. With a few more days, consider a food and winery tour or a visit to the Ayia Napa water park. A week in Protaras lets you explore even more, including a trip to Nicosia and a catamaran cruise.
When it comes to accommodations, Fig Tree Bay is the most popular area, with plenty of hotels and apartments close to the action. For a quieter stay, consider Paralimni village or Pernera Beach, both offering beautiful settings and easy access to Protaras.
Some great places to eat in Protaras include Folio for fresh pasta and sushi, Hippocampus for brunch and cocktails, Marcello’s for authentic Italian cuisine, and Vangelis for delicious Greek-Cypriot meze.
To get to Protaras, Larnaca Airport is the nearest, about 65 kilometers away. You can hire a car, arrange a private transfer, or use public buses. Once in Protaras, most highlights are within walking distance, but cars and scooters are available for hire.
