Xigia Beach & Sulphur Spa: The Ultimate 2023 Guide to Zakynthos' Hidden Gem

Xigia Beach in Zakynthos turned out to be a delightful surprise during our two-week stay on the island. Not only is it stunning, but it also offers health benefits.

After exploring many beautiful spots on Zakynthos, we discovered that while Xigia Beach might not be the top beach in Greece, it’s definitely one of the best on this island. There are actually three Xigia beaches lined up on Zakynthos: one to the south, one in the middle, and the northernmost one, which is the most scenic and has the best sulphur mud.

Xigia Beach is located in the Koroni region on the northeastern coast of Zakynthos Island in the Ionian Sea. The easiest way to get there is by car, which I recommend renting because there’s so much to see and do on the island. Key attractions like Zante Town, the Venetian Castle, Navagio Beach, and Lofos Restaurant are all more accessible with a car. Downloading the Google Maps app and the offline map of Zakynthos can be very helpful.

Among the sulphur beaches nearby, the northern Xigia Beach stands out for its picturesque setting with tall cliffs and white pebble sand. The best time to visit is midday when the sun illuminates the pebbles and the clear Ionian Sea. Early mornings are also beautiful as the sun rises over the mainland.

The best time to visit Zakynthos is during spring (March-May) or fall (August-October) when there are fewer tourists, pleasant weather, and warm seas. However, summer attracts the most visitors because the sea is at its warmest, perfect for sunbathing and swimming, although it can get quite crowded.

To reach Xigia Beach, renting a car is the best option. While some public buses travel from Zakynthos Town to Xigia Beach, they require transfers and a taxi ride from Alykes. There are also tours available, but a rental car remains the most convenient and economical way to explore the island.

Xigia Beach in the north is famous for its sulphur spring, while the other two beaches are also worth exploring. The middle Xigia Beach is harder to access but offers solitude and natural beauty. The southern Xigia Beach has some amenities like umbrellas and chairs for rent.

While many Zakynthos beaches look like they have white, powdery sand, Xigia Beach has tiny pebbles, making water shoes or flip-flops a good choice. The beach’s unique sulphur spring, which releases a milky white substance into the water, might smell a bit but offers health benefits like relief from muscle and bone pain and skin issues.

Accommodations near Xigia Beach include Emerald Suites and Xigia Beach Residence, both offering varying levels of comfort and price ranges. Dining options nearby include Xigia Tavern and Taverna to Pelagaki, both serving delicious Greek dishes with stunning views of the sea.

In summary, Xigia Beach is a unique destination with its sulphur spring, beautiful scenery, and health benefits. It’s a must-visit spot in Zakynthos, offering a natural spa experience along with a relaxing beach day. Bring an umbrella for shade and make sure to enjoy a meal at one of the nearby taverns for a complete experience.
