When most people think of Greece, they picture the sandy beaches of Crete, the historic ruins of the Acropolis in Athens, or the iconic white buildings of Santorini. But with over 6,000 islands to choose from, Zakynthos stands out as a special destination.
Many travelers from Europe, especially the UK, are already familiar with this Ionian treasure located west of mainland Greece, but it may be new to North Americans and other international visitors.
Zakynthos features a rugged coastline, charming villages, hilly terrain, and some of Greece’s best beaches like Navagio Beach. The island is easy to navigate by car and offers a variety of landscapes and attractions, making it perfect for your next Greek adventure.
Most activities in Zakynthos revolve around its beaches, as the island is famous for its stunning coastline. While Zakynthos might not boast the historical depth of Crete or the architectural beauty of Santorini, it offers a wonderfully relaxing holiday spot.
Renting a car in Zakynthos is affordable and highly recommended, providing the freedom to explore all the island’s wonders.
The main attraction is the breathtaking Navagio Beach, featuring white sands, blue waters, and towering cliffs. There’s also an old shipwreck adding to the beach’s allure. You can visit Navagio Beach by sea or view it from the cliffs above. Boat tours are available from various towns, or you can drive to a nearby cove to catch a boat.
A visit to a Greek-run restaurant with spectacular views of Zakynthos’ interior is a must. The food and service are excellent, and it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a sunset. They serve delicious roast lamb and beef stew, with appetizers and drinks at reasonable prices.
Another beautiful spot is Xigia Beach, known for its large cliffs and sulfur hot spring. Don’t miss the Loggerhead Sea Turtles in the Zakynthos Marine Park or the island’s reefs. Responsible boat and snorkeling tours will enhance your chance to see these incredible creatures up close.
For history buffs, the Venetian Castle ruins in Zakynthos town are a worthwhile visit. Though not as grandeur as other Ionian fortresses, it’s a testament to Zakynthos’ historical significance.
Alykes Beach is a favorite with its golden sand, great beach bar, and clear swimming waters. Porto Limnionas offers a picturesque cove with inviting greenish-blue water, perfect for a relaxing day in the sun.
Don’t miss the Keri Cliffs for stunning sea views and sunsets. You can also enjoy a private boat tour of the island, visiting hidden coves and beaches.
Gerakas Beach is another relaxing spot with reddish sand and clear water, located in a marine-protected area. Limnionas is a natural harbor with some of the clearest water you’ll see, with sunbeds available for lounging.
Zakynthos town, though not the most scenic part of Greece, has a unique charm with its array of restaurants, pedestrian streets, and a picturesque harbor. It’s a great spot to explore on foot.
Porto Azzuro is a lovely cove with excellent snorkeling and a nearby beach bar, while Banana Beach offers a quieter, sandy alternative with shuttle service from Argassi.
For a memorable meal, try Taverna Psarou next to Psarou Beach, known for its atmosphere and romantic setting by the sea.
Tsilivi Beach offers a lively vibe with beach bars and restaurants, making it perfect for a day of fun and relaxation.

Accommodations in Zakynthos are affordable, especially in the off-season. We recommend renting a car to explore the island fully, and you’ll find that it’s often more convenient and cost-effective than relying on public transport.
Zakynthos town is worth visiting for its churches, squares, and seaside promenade. The island is famous for its stunning beaches and iconic Shipwreck Cove. Plan to stay at least 3-5 days to fully enjoy what Zakynthos has to offer, with excellent swimming beaches like Porto Azzuro and Tsilivi.
The town of Zakynthos is walkable but exploring the broader island requires transportation. Renting a car is highly recommended.
