Monopoli is a beautiful coastal city in the Puglia region of southern Italy. Brimming with character and history, it’s one of my favorite destinations in the area.

Guarding the entrance to Monopoli’s harbor, the 16th-century Castello Carlo V is one of the city’s iconic landmarks. Used historically as a jail and fortress, it is now a museum open to the public, offering stunning views and a rich collection of artifacts.
Monopoli boasts a great coastline with lovely beaches. Cala Porta Vecchia, on the edge of the old town, is my favorite for its clear waters and views. Other great beaches include Cala di Porto Verde, Porto Rosso, Porto Nero, Porto Bianco, and Cala Cozze, all within walking distance of the city center.
The Cattedrale Maria Santissima della Madia, dating back to the 12th century, is another must-visit site. Though plain on the outside, its interior is mesmerizing, with elaborately carved marble and an intricately painted ceiling.
Monopoli is known for its legendary gelato. Gasperini, around since 1936, offers some of the best flavors, including pistachio crunch and dark chocolate sorbet. Make sure to try it when you visit.
Nearby, Polignano a Mare is a fantastic day-trip destination known for its cliffs and pebble beaches. Just 8 kilometers from Monopoli, it’s easily accessible by train and offers incredible coastal views.
Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, one of Italy’s largest town squares, is a lively place surrounded by shops, cafes, and bars. At night, it bursts with life and is a great spot for enjoying the local atmosphere.
Monopoli’s rich history is full of legends and secrets, best explored with a knowledgeable guide. This can include finding the best spots for local street food, coffee, and ice cream.
For people-watching, head to Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi in the old town. Surrounded by cafes, it’s an excellent spot to relax with a drink and observe local life.
