Located a few miles from Stroud, this charming village is one of my favorite spots, thanks to its stunning appearance, hiking trails, and local pubs. Close by, you’ll find other Cotswold towns, historic buildings, and nature parks. Painswick retains its old-world charm, making it a must-see if you’re visiting the Cotswolds.
In Painswick, you can explore beautiful gardens, hidden museums, welcoming pubs, and some of the finest nature in England. The village is known as the Queen of the Cotswolds because of its perfectly preserved honey-colored houses and beautiful landscapes.
Strolling along New Street, you’ll see some of England’s oldest buildings. Enjoy refreshments at local cafes and pubs like Handmade in Painswick or The Oak after browsing shops. This village is perfect for a relaxed walk, so bring your camera.
One highlight is the Rococo Garden, a stunning ornamental garden from the 18th century. Open from Wednesday to Sunday, it costs £11.50 for adults and £4.90 for children. The garden is especially beautiful in spring and summer and hosts various events like workshops, dog shows, and Shakespeare plays.
The Cotswold Discovery Tour is another fun option. You’ll get a map and clues to explore the area, learning history along the way. Starting points include Painswick, Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, and Stroud.
The Old Ebworth Centre offers a pleasant countryside walk and is a great spot for a family day out. Meanwhile, the Painswick Beacon provides incredible panoramic views from nearly 1,000 feet above sea level and has a lovely 2.25-mile circular walk through woodlands.
St Mary’s Church is a must-visit for its medieval architecture and unique churchyard with 99 yew trees. You can also see the old stocks nearby, which date back to around 1840.
For a touch of culture, visit the Ashton Beer Collection at the quirky museum in Christchurch. It features arts, crafts, and a beautiful stained glass window by Edward Burne-Jones and is open on Saturdays from 2 pm to 5:30 pm.

Barnwood Park and Arboretum near Painswick is a lovely spot with gardens, woodland walks, and a wildlife pond. It’s free to enter and open year-round.
