Travel enhances our connection to the places we visit, and food is a big part of that experience. It grounds us in the present, reminding us of our origins and fueling our adventures. Recently, I spent a weekend in New Hampshire, sampling a variety of delicious foods. Despite being underrated, this state has a thriving food scene.
I chose to drive from Vermont, but buses and trains are also great options for getting to New Hampshire. When there, I was impressed by the abundance of local, fresh ingredients. Food is a window into understanding the unique traditions and customs of a place. Eating local produce connects us directly to the local economy and culture.
Meredith, a small town in New Hampshire, boasts a vibrant food scene. The locals are passionate about their cuisine, which is evident in the quality and presentation of the food. Here are some of my favorite spots:
Sunshine Pa’s is a beloved local diner with a welcoming atmosphere. The reasonably priced breakfast starts at just a few dollars. The friendly staff added to the charm of this place. While the coffee was just okay, the diner fare, including eggs, pancakes, and waffles, was delightful.
The Waterfall Café at the Inn at Mills’ Fall Marketplace offers a polished atmosphere and friendly service. The menu has a good variety of breakfast and lunch options. The staff even provided hiking suggestions.
Town Deli offers a range of sandwiches and salads. The salad was fresh and satisfying, and the place features both indoor and outdoor seating. It’s great for grabbing a bite after a hike, with lots of local beers on tap.
Cafe Vibes focuses on organic, locally sourced food. I enjoyed the Buddha Bowl, which was hearty and tasty. The cafe has different “Soul Bowls” and an espresso bar. The pleasant atmosphere and free WiFi make it a nice spot to relax.
I also visited Laconia, a neighboring town, for some farm-fresh food at a local eatery. Since opening in 2007, this spot has been popular for its seasonal menu that changes every two weeks. The noodle bowl I had was flavorful, with in-house-made noodles.
Giuseppe’s offers home-style Italian dishes with live music every night. The portions are generous, and the shrimp risotto I tried was a unique twist on a classic. They also have a variety of pizzas and pasta options.
Hermit Woods Winery stands out in Meredith with its airy space for wine tastings. Ken, one of the owners, shared the story of the winery’s local roots and experimental fruit wines, made from ingredients like blueberries and crab apples. The winery offers tastings and tours on weekends.
If you seek a great meal in Meredith, you’ll find plenty of options, each emphasizing local and seasonal produce. Enjoy exploring the vibrant food scene in New Hampshire!
