I’ve put together a list of 15 great day trips from Durham, NC, based on my recent three-month stay in the city and its surrounding areas. Durham itself offers plenty to see and do, like trying out amazing BBQ, dining at various restaurants, and enjoying nightlife. There are even some charming cafes worth visiting.

First up, consider a trip to Raleigh, the state capital, just 30 minutes away. Raleigh has a vibrant food, bar, and nightlife scene, along with beautiful oak-lined streets and interesting museums like the NC Museum of Art.
Another suggestion is Wilmington, about 2.5 hours away by car. Its historic downtown and the Wilmington Riverwalk along the Cape Fear River are highlights. You can also visit the USS North Carolina, a WWII battleship turned museum.
Nearby Wilmington is the charming Carolina Beach, known for its sandy shores and lively boardwalk. You can spend the day relaxing, hitting happy hour deals, or enjoying the fairground during warmer months.
Roxboro, a small town about 40 minutes away, offers quintessential small-town Southern charm with vintage houses, an old-school diner, and cafes. It’s a wonderful place to experience local hospitality.

Nature enthusiasts will enjoy Eno River State Park, just 11 miles from Durham. It features hiking trails, historical structures, and recreational areas.
Another idea is a trip to the Outer Banks, about four hours away. This area offers expansive beaches, historic sites, and water sports.
Bryson City, in the Great Smoky Mountains, is ideal for a weekend trip with fantastic hiking, train rides, and river activities like white-water rafting.

Richmond, VA, another state capital, is a couple of hours’ drive from Durham. Full of historic sites and museums, it’s worth a visit for its arts and culture scene as well.
Finally, consider Cary, just 20 miles away. Known for its extensive parks and green spaces, Cary also hosts cultural activities at the Cary Arts Center and concerts at the Koka Booth Amphitheatre.
