After living in Jacksonville for a year, I was amazed at how many free attractions the city has to offer. Whether you’re on a budget or just looking to save some money, Jacksonville is a fantastic place to explore.
Originally, I visited the area for five years before moving here, and during times when money was tight, I discovered countless enjoyable activities that don’t cost a dime. Here are my favorite free things to do and places to visit in Jacksonville, Florida.
One of the best free activities in Jacksonville is visiting its stunning beaches. The city is home to some incredible beach towns like Ponte Vedra Beach, Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, and Atlantic Beach. Each area offers something unique, whether it’s diverse eateries or a particular vibe, but the one thing they all have in common is beautiful, soft white sand perfect for sunbathing and relaxing.
Another great option is the Riverside Arts Market, held every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the north bank of the St. Johns River, under the Fuller Warren Bridge. It’s filled with local vendors, live music, and delicious food. While you might spend some money on purchases, simply enjoying the atmosphere and art is completely free.
For those who love hiking, the Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve offers 46,000 acres of pristine marshland and beautiful trails. You’ll find giant oak trees draped in Spanish moss and an observation tower that provides a stunning view of the estuaries. It’s a fantastic way to immerse yourself in nature without spending anything.
Another historical site worth visiting is the Kingsley Plantation, located within the same preserve. This living history exhibit includes the oldest intact plantation house in Florida, gardens, a kitchen, a barn, and 20 well-preserved tabby slave cabins. It’s free to enter and offers an audio tour to enrich your experience.
The Jacksonville Arboretum and Botanical Gardens is another must-see, covering over 120 acres with 7 trails leading through 13 distinct ecosystems. It’s perfect for a peaceful walk among massive oak trees, lakes, and marshland.
Jacksonville is also a hotspot for outdoor festivals, many of which are free. The Jacksonville Jazz Festival, held annually during Memorial Day Weekend, is just one example. Other festivals include PorchFest, Springing the Blues, and Jax Pride, so be sure to check the event calendar during your visit.
The Beaches Museum in Jacksonville Beach offers free entry and provides a fascinating look into the history and culture of the beach towns. It’s suitable for all ages and is conveniently located near the beach for a swim afterward.
Enjoy the beauty of the St. Johns River by walking along its banks and exploring the local art installation “Mirrored River: Where Do You See Yourself?” under the Main Street Bridge. The 64-foot piece is especially stunning at sunset.
For biking enthusiasts, many hotels offer free bike rentals. One of the best trails is the 14.5-mile Baldwin Trail at Camp Milton Historic Preserve. Sheltered by a tree canopy, it’s a scenic path perfect for a family outing.
The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens is another top attraction. Although not always free, it offers six free admission days a month. Located near the north bank of the river, the museum boasts over 5,000 works of art and beautifully maintained gardens.
Then there’s the Fort Caroline National Memorial, which takes you back to the 16th-century French presence in Florida. It’s a historical treasure trove and offers free entry along with an optional audio tour.

For contemporary art enthusiasts, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) is located next to the library and offers free admission on select days. It’s the second-oldest contemporary art museum in the country and home to unique artworks.
