Top 10 Must-Visit Beaches in Puerto Vallarta

Nestled in the beautiful Banderas Bay on Mexico’s Pacific coast, Puerto Vallarta is a prime vacation spot thanks to its fantastic beaches and the variety of activities each one offers. Whether you’re into water sports or just lounging with a margarita, there’s a beach here for you.

With so many beaches to choose from, deciding which ones to visit can be overwhelming. Having spent nearly two years in Puerto Vallarta, I’ve got the inside scoop on the best spots.

I’m usually not a huge beach person, but in Puerto Vallarta, it’s different. Floating in the Pacific while admiring the Sierra Madre mountains is a sight that never gets old. Plus, the delicious seafood, cold beers, and roaming mariachi bands add to the experience.

The most famous beach is Playa Los Muertos, located in the city’s heart. Its name, which means “Beach of the Dead,” comes from an archaeological discovery of human bones in ceramic pots. The beach features a beautiful sail-shaped pier that’s especially stunning at sunset. It can get crowded, but it’s great for swimming, sunbathing, and various water activities like paragliding and jet skiing. Numerous restaurants along the beach offer shaded seating if you order food.

If you want to escape the crowds, head south to Conchas Chinas. This beach is named after the curvy shells found here. It’s less touristy, with fewer bars and restaurants, but it’s perfect for snorkeling and quiet relaxation. Just bring some water shoes for the rocky areas.

For a quieter experience, visit Playa Punta Negra. Located in front of similarly named condos, this beach is a public but less accessible spot perfect for a peaceful day of swimming and sunbathing. Nearby, Playa Palmares offers a similar vibe.

Continuing south, Playa Las Gemelas features clear waters and shaded spots. While there are no public restrooms, it’s a great place to relax if you bring your own snacks and drinks.

Playa Mismaloya, known for its role in the 1964 film “The Night of the Iguana,” is another must-visit. It’s a fantastic spot for snorkeling and diving, thanks to the nearby Los Arcos National Marine Park. You can also rent paddleboards or join a tour.

Further south, Boca de Tomatlan is a small town worth visiting for its food and water taxis to places like Yelapa. The beach isn’t special, but it’s a starting point for reaching hidden beaches. You can hike along the coast to Las Animas, passing by nearly empty beaches along the way.

If you’re up for a peaceful retreat, consider staying in condos or villas along these quieter beaches. Playa Camarones, located north of Los Muertos in El Centro, is popular with locals. Though it’s rocky, it’s perfect for parasailing or jet skiing.

Heading further north takes you out of Puerto Vallarta and into Nuevo Vallarta, Bucerias, and Sayulita. Another unique spot is the Hidden Beach in the Marietas Islands, accessible by boat and featuring a secluded beach inside a volcanic island.

There are many incredible beaches to explore in Puerto Vallarta. Mix it up by spending time on the bustling central beaches and then heading south for more tranquil spots. Besides beaches, Puerto Vallarta offers various activities and attractions worth exploring.
