Top 15 Must-See Destinations in Nova Scotia, Canada

With so many places to visit and things to do in Nova Scotia, it can be tough to pick the must-sees, especially if you’re short on time. From scenic drives and hiking trails to fresh seafood and colorful fishing towns, Nova Scotia is full of incredible experiences waiting to be discovered.

We spent 15 days exploring Halifax, Cape Breton Island, the South Shore, Yarmouth and Acadian Shores, Bay of Fundy, the Annapolis Valley, and Northumberland Shore. And we barely scratched the surface! Though small, Nova Scotia offers a lot for travelers.

Halifax is a fantastic starting point. Just a 30-minute drive from the airport takes you to Downtown Halifax and its lively Waterfront area. The city is manageable in size but packed with things to do, from green spaces and historical sites to pedestrian walks, galleries, museums, and fantastic restaurants. Don’t miss taking the short ferry ride to Dartmouth for more exploring.

For accommodations, staying near the Waterfront offers proximity to great restaurants and tourist spots. We enjoyed our stay at the historic Westin Nova Scotian and also an Airbnb near the Waterfront.

For food lovers, Halifax is a paradise with a mix of seafood, international cuisine, and vegan-friendly options. Peggy’s Cove is another must-see, known for its picturesque lighthouse and surrounding granite boulders. It’s an easy day trip from Halifax or a perfect stop on a longer road trip.

Continue along the Lighthouse Route to explore Mahone Bay and its iconic 3 churches. The town offers a relaxed atmosphere filled with local shops, great food, and the Saltbox Brewery. From Mahone Bay, you can hike the Bay To Bay Trail to Lunenburg, a historic fishing village and UNESCO World Heritage site. Lunenburg’s charming streets and harbor-side restaurants are best enjoyed on foot, and a guided walking tour is highly recommended.

If you’re in the mood for some kayaking, head to the picturesque Blue Rocks, just minutes from Lunenburg. Paddle through calm channels and spot seals and other wildlife.

Shelburne is rich in history, where thousands of Loyalists settled during the American Revolution. Today, you can explore its shipbuilding facilities, farmer’s markets, and vibrant restaurant scene.

For outdoor adventures, Kejimkujik National Park offers hiking, canoeing, and camping. The “Hemlocks and Hardwoods” trail features ancient hemlock trees and scenic boardwalks.

The Annapolis Valley is famous for its wineries and fresh produce. Wolfville and Annapolis Royal are great towns to visit, offering everything from walking trails and boutique shops to cideries and vineyards.

Pictou is steeped in Scottish heritage and features colorful waterfront homes and shops. Nearby Inverness offers fantastic options for golfing, fishing, and camping. Don’t miss the Glenora Inn and Distillery for a taste of single malt whisky and live music.

One of the highlights of Nova Scotia is the Cabot Trail, a scenic 298 km drive with breathtaking views of the coastline and Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Enjoy hiking trails, hidden coves, and opportunities for camping and kayaking.

Ingonish, part of the Highlands National Park, is perfect for activities like hiking, whale watching, and beach swimming. The Middle Head Trail provides stunning views, while the Franey Mountain Trail offers a more challenging adventure.

Baddeck, set on Bras d’Or Lake, is a great place to relax or indulge in water sports. Visit the Alexander Graham Bell Museum or take a boat tour to see puffins and other wildlife.
