Consider renting a car or motorbike while you’re there. We used a moped, which was great for two people, but if you’re with family or friends, a car might be better. Local transport options like buses and taxis are available, but having your own vehicle gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Beware that taxis charge fixed rates, but tourists can sometimes be overcharged, so it’s wise to ask your hotel for guidance.
Once you’ve sorted out your transport, it’s time to plan your adventure! We stayed for 10 days and it still felt too short. Santorini is full of wonderful places to explore, but often, it’s the unplanned moments that make your trip special. Don’t hesitate to detour for a free wine tasting or accept an invitation for a local drink.
Sunsets in Santorini are legendary, and watching one from a cliff-side above the Mediterranean is a must. Here are some top sunset spots:
– The Akrotiri Lighthouse: Known locally as “Faros,” this spot offers a stunning view of the sunset. As the sun goes down, the lighthouse’s white tower takes on a new glow, and its light romantically cuts through the night sky.
– Hillside Behind Oia: This was our favorite spot. It’s off a dirt road north of Oia. Bring a blanket and enjoy the breathtaking views.
– Donkey Stairs of Naoussa: While tourists flock to Oia’s cliffs, this alternative offers a quieter experience. Used by donkeys during the day, it transforms into a serene sunset vantage point.
While you’ll have your own must-see list, here are a few hidden gems worth considering:
– Gavalas Vineyard: We found this place by accident and were delighted by the tasty tapas and free wine tastings. The setting and service were excellent.
– Perissa Beach: This black-sand beach is a hidden treasure. We stayed at Sandy Villas, a great value accommodation just a short walk away. The area is filled with rental shops, bars, and restaurants.
– Volcano Tour: Santorini’s volcanic history is fascinating. Tours from the old port of Fira to Nea Kameni let you walk around active craters. The smell of sulfur and the impressive landscape make this a memorable experience.
– The Foot Path To Oia: This scenic three-hour walk from Fira to Oia offers fantastic views and is a great way to see the island. You can take a bus or taxi back afterward.
Santorini’s architecture and natural beauty make it a must-visit destination. Spend at least a week exploring, and ask locals for their hidden gems.
