Crete, the largest and most populous Greek Island, is the fifth-largest in the Mediterranean. Stretching 260 by 60 kilometers (8,336 km²), it’s a vast destination worth spending ample time exploring. While local buses and taxis are available, renting a car is highly recommended to make the most of your visit. This way, you can freely explore multiple sites daily and truly experience everything the island has to offer. We rented a car for our two-week stay, and it was undoubtedly the best way to uncover the island’s hidden gems.
Here are five must-see sites as you explore Crete:
1. Elafonissi Beach – Known for its unique pink sand, Elafonissi Beach is located on an island in the southwestern corner of Crete. During low tide, you can walk over a large sandbar to reach the island. Once there, you can relax and enjoy the sun and sea. Remember to leave the sand undisturbed for future visitors to enjoy this unique spot.
2. Balos Beach – After a 7-kilometer ride on a bumpy road, you’ll reach a parking lot on a cliff. From there, you’ll walk down to the beach, which reveals a stunning view of a large sandbar stretching across neon blue waters. The only amenities are lounge chairs with umbrellas, making it a perfect spot to relax and take in the beautiful scenery.
3. Samaria Gorge – This National Park, established in 1962, offers a beautiful, albeit long, hiking trail. Starting at an altitude of 1,250 meters, the path winds through lush forests and follows a river, occasionally forming waterfalls. The 16-kilometer hike is mostly downhill, making it quite manageable, though it can be tough on the knees. Starting early is advisable to avoid crowds and enjoy a more peaceful hike.
4. The Minoan Palace of Knossos – Located 5 kilometers south of Heraklion, this historical site was reportedly the seat of the legendary King Minos. Continuously inhabited from 7000 B.C. until Roman times, it wasn’t discovered and excavated until 1900 AD. The site features well-preserved frescoes, palaces, showrooms, and homes that transport you back in time. Allocate a few hours to explore, preferably early in the morning to avoid the tour bus crowds.
5. Lasithi Plateau – This expansive area covers over 130 km² and is filled with traditional villages, fertile farmlands, archaeological sites, and ancient caves. It’s best explored by car, allowing you to visit charming restaurants that serve local wine, feta cheese, bread, and tzatziki. Plan a full day to explore the plateau, as navigating around herds of sheep crossing the road can take some time.
During our visit to Crete, we were astounded by the abundance of world-class historical sites, hiking trails, and beaches. Our days were packed with exploration, relaxation, and learning about the island’s rich history. While we discovered many sites, the five mentioned above were definite highlights.
