Thanks to its prime location, Jacksonville offers a plethora of exciting day trips just a short drive from downtown. Nestled amongst stunning islands and beaches, nature preserves, and historical sites, there’s always somewhere new to explore.
Having visited the area for five years and lived just south of Jacksonville for over a year, I’ve discovered countless attractions and dozens of day trips in the region. Yet, there are still so many more places nearby waiting to be explored!
From beaches and kayaking to historical sites and museums, just hop in the car, and you’ll find fascinating destinations right around the corner. While it’s tough to pick the top excursions, here are some of my favorite day trips from Jacksonville that offer something for everyone.
Just a 45-minute drive from downtown Jacksonville, Saint Augustine is a must-see. It’s the oldest city in the nation, founded in 1565, and brimming with rich history, an old fort, museums, parks, and restaurants. The historic downtown area, with its incredible architecture and cobblestone streets, is a joy to walk through.
Amelia Island, another fantastic option, is located 45 minutes northeast of Jacksonville. This family-friendly island boasts pristine beaches, a charming downtown area, and a plethora of outdoor activities. It’s especially pleasant to visit during the shoulder seasons when the weather is warm, but the crowds have dwindled.
For nature enthusiasts, the Talbot Islands offer a great escape. Little Talbot Island, just 30 minutes from Jacksonville, has five miles of beautiful beaches, bike trails, and plenty of wildlife. The state park is also a great spot for camping under the stars.
Cumberland Island in Georgia, an hour away, is a remarkable haven with its spectacular natural habitats and wild beauty. Home to loggerhead sea turtles, feral horses, and diverse wildlife, it’s a nature lover’s paradise.
A little over an hour from Jacksonville, Jekyll Island, Georgia, is worth every minute of the drive. With peaceful beaches, excellent restaurants, golf courses, and more, it’s a hidden gem that’s perfect for a full day of exploration.
Closer to Gainesville, the Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park offers a unique day trip to see a 120-foot-deep sinkhole surrounded by lush vegetation.
If you’re seeking peace in nature, the Osceola National Forest, just 45 minutes away, is an ideal destination. With miles of trails, beaches for swimming, and ponds for fishing, it’s a refreshing escape close to Jacksonville.
Gainesville itself, a lively college town, is another fun day trip option with its parks, museums, and bustling food scene.
Saint Simons Island, Georgia, recognized for its romantic charm, is just over an hour away and offers beautiful beaches and delightful seafood dining.
Daytona Beach, famous for its vibrant scene and the Daytona International Speedway, is about an hour and a half from Jacksonville, providing lots of beachside activities.
Palatka, a charming inland town, offers the serene beauty of the Ravine Gardens State Park with its lush trails, waterfalls, and suspension bridges.
If you’re looking to cool off during summer, Ginnie Springs is an excellent choice with its crystal clear waters and fun activities like kayaking, snorkeling, and floating on inner tubes.
For a postcard-perfect experience, visit Juniper Springs Recreation Area, about two hours away, with its clear spring waters and shaded picnic spots.
Savannah, Georgia, is a bit further out at two hours away but filled with Southern charm, historic sites, and delicious eateries. It’s an ideal day trip for those up for a longer drive.
Lastly, Cedar Lakes Woods and Gardens, with its stunning botanical displays, waterfalls, and walking trails, make for another tranquil and picturesque day trip.
Jacksonville’s location allows for amazing day trip excursions, whether you’re seeking an island getaway or a refreshing dip in natural springs. There’s something nearby for everyone’s taste and interest.
